DG had a map. The Royal Cartographer drew it for her. Each county and town was marked on the map, but no detail had been filled in. It was like something from a child's coloring book. As they traveled, DG drew her impressions of the places they visited.
Most of the images made sense. One town had a central square filled with fragrant green blossoms and DG drew one that was so vivid Azkedillia could smell it. A valley where they were chased by a flight of sun addled sparrows had their father covered in tiny birds. Others only made sense to DG, but they could still be recognized.
One night DG had it rolled out on the table in the library. She and Glitch were making plans to revisit some of the nearby areas, plans which happily did not include Az. She put her feet up and found her book. With them busy she could lose herself in it for a few hours at least.
When she finally put the book down, Azkedillia discovered that only the map remained to keep her company. She went around the room cleaning up books and papers before heading to bed. Standing at the table, she found herself studying the map. Many memories from their travels were painful, but DG's bright drawings were only of the things that made her sister smile.
Azkedillia carefully rolled the map and set it on a nearby shelf for safe keeping. She turned down the lights and carefully closed the door. Her feet practically dragged as she walked toward her bedroom. Finally washed, changed and tucked comfortably in her bed, Azkedillia admitted the truth to herself.
If she were to complete that map, every area would be nothing but a swirl of grey confusion.
