Azkedillia sat quietly in her garden, the small section of the royal gardens set aside for her to find some peace. She'd requested it shyly, thrilling her mother and confusing her father. She had no intention of working the plot. It wasn't her hands that needed occupying. It wasn't even her head. She could keep both busy enough if she tried just dealing with the realities of rebuilding the OZ.
Requests came in every day for help undoing the damage the Sorceress had done. First they had to be evaluated for the urgency of their local impact. Then for their urgency to the OZ as a whole. Finally for their political import. She was a natural at it all.
She would have always been a natural at it, she realized. Not DG, the shining namesake. She didn't have the patience for it. She would make a much better figurehead. Together, in time, they could rule beautifully. That was what was expected of them, she knew. That was how they would show the OZ that order had been restored.
What was left for Azkedillia to decide was what she thought of it all. There was no question it was logical. There was no question it would be good for the OZ. The only real question in her mind was if it was what she wanted. Would it, in the long run, serve her?
She thought that no one else had followed her thoughts, that no one else knew how she worried at the problem, until the day he came into her garden and sat beside her. She could tell from the way he leaned back against the wall and tipped his hat over his face that he didn't really expect an answer. All Wyatt Cain did was nod briefly, and then ask softly, "So, are you with them or against them?"
